IISERs were created through a proclamation of Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, to promote quality education and research in science and related areas. IISER Bhopal was established in 2008 and was incorporated as an Institution of National Importance under the umbrella of the NIT (Amendment) Act, 2012 (NIT Act 2007), along with the other IISERs.

The campus of IISER Bhopal in an outlay of about 200 acres is a state of the art educational and research campus with lecture halls, well equipped teaching laboratories, library, computer facilities for students, research laboratories, meeting halls/auditoriums and residential facilities for the community. Each IISER is a degree-granting autonomous institute. The Institute has a total of eight departments namely, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Engineering Sciences, Mathematics and Physics. It also houses two Centers of Excellence. IISER Bhopal aims to provide quality science education to UG and PG students. The prime focus of the Institute is to integrate science education with research. Also, the Institute is committed to impart high ethical values and create social and environment awareness.

IISER Bhopal is located in the Capital city of Madhya Pradesh and is surrounded by premier institutes of India, such as School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) and National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). Within a few kilometres from the campus, a major Information Technology (IT) Park is under construction. Thus, an ecosystem of academic, technological and entrepreneurial excellence is emerging in this region and IICE incubator aims to stimulate the establishment and growth of technology-based startups and other compatible businesses in this ecosystem. The incubator would also contribute to job creation, and provide for enhanced economic health to the region.

IISERB is now an established Institute with a robust infrastructure, and houses eminent faculty and motivated students who are keen to convert the in-house generated technologies/ideas into commercially viable products. The establishment of IICE TBI at IISER Bhopal is likely to create an entrepreneurial ecosystem in the campus and also in its vicinity.
